About twenty minutes ago I received an e-mail from the University of Chicago confirming that indeed someone has cracked the "Case of the Mysterious Marginalia." For those out of the know, a rare 1504 edition of Homer had some sort of code, shorthand, or tachygraphic writing along the pages in Book 11 of the Odyssey, which details Odysseus' descent into Hades. The University of Chicago Library, which owns the book, offered $1000 to the sleuth that could crack the case.
This morning, Alice Schreyer, librarian with the University of Chicago, sent me the following:
We have a winner and the contest is indeed closed... We will be posting the results in a few days.
Congratulations to the winner! I very much look forward to seeing the results.
Update: Affirmed on the University of Chicago website.
Update2: NBC News is reporting the same.
